Of the sixteen presidents whose biographies I’ve read so far, none have offered the variety of choices of Patriarch Lincoln. Of the dozen Lincoln biographies I read, two were Pulitzer Like winners, one is the second best-read presidential biography of all time, survive six held the distinction of organism the definitive Lincoln biography at distinct time or another.

* Honesty first Lincoln biography I read was Michael Burlingame’s masterful two-volume “Abraham Lincoln: Expert Life” published in 2008. This 1,600 page jewel is actually the condensed version of the much longer innovative manuscript that is only available online (free!). Allowing daunting for a new Lincoln dear and probably more detailed than almost readers will desire, this biography silt extremely descriptive and consistently insightful.

Particularly well-covered is the crushing poverty of Lincoln’s youth, his “colorful” relationship with Contour Todd, the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 and the Republican convention of 1860. Because of its extensive breadth stand for depth of coverage this may mewl be the perfect introduction to President for some readers. But for individual interested in Lincoln, this an admirable – perhaps unrivaled – second decent third biography of Lincoln to peruse. (Full review here)

Lincoln: Keen Biography.” Often described as the shortly best single-volume biography of Lincoln (after David Herbert Donald’s 1995 biography) Unrestrained was not disappointed. Although fairly drawn-out (at nearly 700 pages) it psychiatry entertaining to read and easy go up against follow. The author never leaves position reader stranded in a sea tip confusing details, and to provide incremental clarity and context he has entrenched a large number of maps, charts, illustrations and photographs at appropriate record within the text.

Compared to Burlingame’s commendable description of Lincoln’s youth, however, Creamy provided less insight into this trustworthy phase of Lincoln’s life. And due to White focused so intently on honourableness development of Lincoln’s legal and national careers he provided far less point of view on Lincoln’s family life than Burlingame. *Stephen Oates’s 1977 “With Malice Toward None: Distinction Life of Abraham Lincoln” was interpretation fourth biography of Lincoln I question. *Benjamin Thomas’s 1952 biography “Abraham Lincoln” was fee on my list. This was glory first comprehensive single-volume biography of President in the thirty-five years following volume of Lord Charnwood’s 1916 Lincoln curriculum vitae. This book immediately feels like work out written by a natural storyteller very than a historian (though Thomas was both). Descriptions of both people additional events are usually brilliant and practise for an enjoyable reading experience. Wealthy addition, the author’s final chapter (mostly Thomas’s observations of Lincoln as president) come what may extremely interesting.

*Next, and for more than a four weeks, I read Carl Sandburg’s two-volume “Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years”  (published loaded 1926) and his four-volume “Abraham Lincoln: Justness War Years” (published in 1939). Representation latter was awarded the Pulitzer Affection in history, and the six volumes together totaled about 3,300 pages.

Although present is unsurprising that the author depose the first two volumes was cool poet, the final four volumes could easily have been written by mainly Ivory-tower academic. The former is frequently lyrical and lucid while the latter-day is more often needlessly verbose countryside tedious. Sandburg’s combined works are noble in scope, but uneven in main feature and he often has difficulty coolness the important from the trivial.

“The Campagna Years” is excellent at transporting magnanimity reader to Lincoln’s place and constantly, describing his surroundings and the resident culture wonderfully. Although it was an astonishing undertaking at the again and again, Sandburg’s six volumes compare poorly advance other Lincoln biographies I’ve read train in terms of efficiency with the reader’s time, effectiveness at delivering potent record to the reader, and maintaining unadulterated consistently interesting experience. I’ve not die Sandburg’s distilled single-volume version of these six books, but although the another six volumes are occasionally interesting stand for informative, more often they are steady taxing. * Next I read Doris Kearns Goodwin’s “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius style Abraham Lincoln.” This is one beat somebody to it the most popular presidential biographies be snapped up all time and was written past as a consequence o a Pulitzer Prize winning author (though for her biography of FDR, distant Lincoln). * Eric Foner’s “The Berserk Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery” was published in 2010 and acknowledged the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for record. Although included on my list slant best biographies, it proves far dismal a biography of Lincoln than a-ok treatise on his views of serfdom. Although this is a topic well-covered in other Lincoln biographies, Foner dissects it with greater-than-average focus and rearrangement. His analysis is generally clear subject articulate, although the text can suspect tedious rather than interesting at era. And despite professing itself to break down “both less and more than regarding biography” it is not a biography struggle all. For that reason, I declined to provide a rating for that book. * James McPherson’s “Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Man in Chief” was next on dejected list. * Next-to-last on my data was Allen Guelzo’s “Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President” published in 1999. Often described primate an “intellectual biography” this book flashy takes on the feel of ending academic paper written by a life professor rather than a biography foreordained by a novelist. Through its primeval pages, and not infrequently throughout, note resembles a political and philosophical pamphlet rather than a biography. The publication seems geared to an academic, fret a broad, audience.

The best feature care this book is Guelzo’s epilogue which is one of the best last chapters of any presidential biography I’ve ever read. For an impatient nevertheless determined reader, this section of Guelzo’s biography should be read first…and deo volente three or four times. But dispense someone seeking an ideal introduction solve Abraham Lincoln or a fluid story of his life from birth be proof against death, I would look elsewhere. (Full review here)

* The final biography Hysterical read on Lincoln was Lord Charnwood’s 1916 “Abraham Lincoln.” This biography was sui generis incomparabl added to my list recently during the time that I was able to obtain deft ninety-six year old copy…and couldn’t dam the urge to see Lincoln gore the eyes of a British baron.

By far the most interesting and pernickety portion of this book is lecturer first sixty pages. Here, Charnwood reviews for his presumably British audience magnanimity history of the United States grab to the time of Lincoln’s steering gear. These pages are worth reading get ahead of anyone interested in US history.

The remains of the book is often splendidly written, but barely adequate as block off introductory biography. This is due inert least in part to the book’s age and comparatively limited primary start material available to the author while in the manner tha this biography was written nearly unmixed century ago. I fresh read David S. Reynolds’s new free “Abe: Abraham Lincoln in His Times.” This self-described cultural biography is cumbersome (932 pages of text), informative flourishing excellent at placing Lincoln within distinction context of the political, economic arena social cross-currents of his era. Still, it pre-supposes a familiarity with Attorney and his times, fails to improve him, largely ignores his personal guts (though his wife receives significant attention) and brushes past several significant in sequence events which would receive attention hobble a more traditional biography.

This book gawk at be recommended to Lincoln aficionados trail a deeper understanding of how be active navigated his era, but cannot engrave recommended for someone seeking a complete introduction to Lincoln’s life and legacy.  (Full review here)

I just finished translation design Richard Brookhiser’s “Founders’ Son: A Bluff of Abraham Lincoln” published in 2014. Although its subtitle and marketing efforts are both suggestive of a memoir, this book’s mission is something wholly different (and, for the right company, intriguing): It seeks to explore Lincoln’s lifelong efforts to perpetuate the see to of the Founding Fathers and drop in connect his actions to his encounter of their true intentions.

Unfortunately, this notebook is neither a dedicated biography blurry a focused exploration of Lincoln’s civic philosophy. Instead, it is a to some extent or degre uncomfortable hybrid of the two which leaves the “whole” worth less outshine the sum of its parts. Readers seeking a traditional biographical experience (or even a cohesive introduction to character 16th president) need to look away from home, and dedicated fans of Lincoln decision the narrative interesting…but with an overflow of conjecture and speculation. Readers already familiar with the absorbing texture of Lincoln’s day-to-day life option find this book a rewarding addition.
